We did get by without words for a long time, but the kinds of meanings that can be conveyed by pure ritual are limited and vague. They tend to foster a sense of mystery and pressure towards conformity with group behaviors.

Words change all that. They allow for precision in reference and the individualization/customization of values and goals. That can be immensely liberating but also overwhelmingly alienating at the same time.
