The problem with using TMT to explain the radicalization of the right is that the right’s real base of support isn’t poor whites who have a material basis for feeling insecure.
Their base consists of affluent whites who don’t have college degrees. These people are generally economically secure. They can only feel insecure (materially and spiritually) if they have been taught to see themselves that way.
Decreasing inequality via redistribution can help prevent working class (particularly Black and Hispanic) voters from drifting to the right, but expect those policies to only further alienate the affluent, non-college educated whites who carried Trump to victory
