The means to repel slavery is to vote for people who won't pass laws that actually take away your liberty. Right now the Republicans want to make it so elections don't matter. Why do they want to make elections meaningless? Because they know they'll lose if it's a fair contest.

So those of us who love freedom vote for the party that's trying to expand access to the ballot box. Once democracy is secure, you won't need your gun to protect you against tyranny (not that it would do you any good anyway).
