That’s a bit of a silly question, though, isn’t it? When you were a kid you likely had no responsibilities, so of course you felt more free.
But as for government, it’s definitely gotten less free.
Judges and justices appointed by Reagan, Bush I and II, and Trump have:
1) made the executive more like an elected monarch than a prime minister
2) made antitrust rulings that have contributed to corporate consolidation and the decline of small businesses
3) eroded the ability of workers to organize for better wages and working conditions
4) allowed unchecked spending by powerful interests in our elections
5) allowed gerrymandering, undermining the principle of one person one vote
6) allowed voter suppression
7) encouraged aggressive policing strategies and tactics at the expense of our privacy and civil liberties
8) eroded accountability for reckless prosecutors
9) stripped women of the right to choose
10) allowed the introduction of religious indoctrination in public schools and the funding of religious instruction with public funds
I’m sure I could find more to complain about wrt Federalist Society judges and what they have done to our country, this is just off the top of my head and took me two minutes to write.
I was born in 1980. So yeah, since the time when Stranger Things was set I definitely think we have lost freedom in all the ways I just described. But I really can’t think of a single judicial opinion in all that time, authored by a liberal majority over conservatives’ dissent, that attacked my freedom in any way.
