Putting on my lawyer hat for a sec, I don’t think the general concept of four-armed humanoids is sufficiently concrete to be copyrightable. Even so, I could still see the mere threat of litigation being an obstacle (though who knows, Cameron isn’t the kind to shy away from adding more expenses to his budgets).
