Peterson is just recycling the ideas of Rev. Paul Tillich from his book “Dynamics of Faith,” first published 70 years ago. Tillich, in turn, was elaborating on ideas earlier developed by Friedrich Schleiermacher.

In his book “I and Thou,” the Jewish theologian Martin Buber criticized Schleiermacher’s theology. I’d be interested to know whether Peterson engages with this long running debate, but I doubt it. Based on his very thin reading of Marx, which nevertheless hasn’t prevented him from running his mouth about “postmodern neomarxists,” I suspect he’s doing the same thing now.

His readers should save their money and just get a library card.
