Overall a good article, but I disagree that Asians and poor people (rural or otherwise) are excluded from the ability to claim victimhood status.

After the 2016 election the mainstream media went to enormous lengths to "understand" the non college educated rural white Trump voter. The whole thesis of much of that reporting centered around (justifiable) feelings of having been victimized by neoliberal economic policies.

And in the wake of Covid there was also a concerted effort on the part of the media to highlight anti-Asian hate crimes.
