My favorite book on language is still The Symbolic Species, by Terrence Deacon. Distant second would be The Unfolding of Language, by Guy Deutscher.

But Deacon’s book isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s long and the second section is quite technical, but his thesis is very convincing.
