It’s not bizarre or logically incompatible. It’s called ethical humanism. Check out A Common Faith, by the humanist philosopher John Dewey.
As for Peterson, people think he’s such an original thinker, but his views on religion are just the rehashed theology of Paul Tillich (see Dynamics of Faith). Tillich in turn was riffing on the work of Max Scheler (see On the Eternal in Man).
