I’m not refuting objective truth. I’m saying truth that goes beyond humanity’s evolved default way of looking at the world is both powerful but also for many people unsatisfying. The Enlightenment, capitalism, democracy, these are all hard things to make work for everyone in a way that preserves our sense of connection to the world and to each other.

We have neglected the importance of this fact. Liberalism, libertarianism, and scientism have plunged ahead building their brave new world, but humanity can’t live in it. Marx understood this, but his followers used his critique of modernity to build just one more modernist ideology that was equally dehumanizing.

I don’t want to go back to the cave of parochial human truths. But no one will brave the sea of deeper Truth if they find nothing but alienation on the way.
