If you just look at it in terms of whether the beliefs involved are true, then definitely you’re right. But religion’s most important function I think is as a kind of social glue, and viewed in that light I think it leverages human emotions quite effectively to fulfill its ends. So in the broader sense of aligning actions with objectives, you could say there is some rationality there.
Hume said reason is and ought to be the slave of the passions. I think that’s true. But Israel/Palestine perfectly illustrates how the wrong passions can lead reason down a dead end.
