I can hardly improve on the remarks of former Justice David Souter, delivered at Harvard’s commencement ceremony in 2010 (and which I had the pleasure to attend). Understand his arguments, and you’ll understand why “adhering to the constitution” as nice as it sounds, contains no substantive content.
