I think there is a crucial distinction between values like truth, justice, dignity, beauty, on the one hand, and fame, wealth, tribe, etc. on the other.

The former are inexhaustible sources of meaning, and the community they are capable of sustaining encompasses all rational beings.

But the latter are necessarily limited, and the communities they are capable of sustaining are correspondingly circumscribed.

The difference is akin to the distinction that theologian Paul Tillich drew in Dynamics of Faith between ultimate concerns and concerns that lack ultimacy. The first kind can be the basis of a genuine faith, the the second are just false idols.

The humanist philosopher John Dewey makes a similar observation in his book A Common Faith.
