I don’t understand voters who have that attitude. Each party embraces policies that, taken together, paint a portrait of the society they want us to be. A rational voter compares those portraits with their own ideal and votes for the party that’s closer.
All this “I don’t like things now so I’ll just vote for whoever’s not in power” is stupid for several reasons:
1) there’s no strategy behind it; it’s purely reactive
2) macroeconomic trends move more slowly than the political calendar, so today’s shittiness may be as much a function of policies of the party out of power from back when they were in power.
3) in the special case of the Democrats, it’s stupid to blame them for failing to do things that they couldn’t do because gerrymandering and the filibuster mean that just having a bare majority doesn’t mean shit about their ability to do anything
