I don’t think the old guard thought Sanders would be stronger. They remembered Bill Clinton’s winning strategy of triangulation and assumed they still lived in a world where the Democrat who ran to the center would win. Also, non white Democrats tend to be more conservative, more risk averse, and they also rejected Sanders.
