I dont see it the same way. Trump behaves in an undignified manner, but that doesn’t mean he lacks “dignity” (or “personlichkeit” in the German legal system, sometimes translated as “personality” or “personhood”).
It’s also why the EU doesn’t have the death penalty. It’s not that your choices haven’t evinced an insouciance on your part for your own dignity or rights, but that the rest of us would be diminished if we lowered ourselves to suffering a being deemed unworthy of dignity to exist in fellowship with us.
Reminds me of what James Baldwin said about how racism dehumanized racists as much as the victim of racism. We don’t want to be complicit in a system that ratifies a relinquishment of anyone’s dignity, even if it appears voluntary, because (1) it might not be, but also (2) it subtracts from the basic commitment to see each other in a certain light
