I agree with the basic premise, though I’m not so pessimistic about UBI. Some combination of both will probably be necessary to deal with the economic dislocations we’ve already seen and the ones to come.

I’ve said before the real problem in America is inequality of dignity. People denied a life of dignity will seize on whatever promises to close that gap. When economic policies that would lay the material foundation for a life of dignity are shouted down as “socialism,” we fall back on culture wars and identity politics, a complete political dead end.
