Are you sure you don’t have an overly narrow understanding of freedom. A person stranded on a desert island has no external constraints on her behavior, but I’d hardly call her free.

Judge John MacGuire once defined the law as “those wise restraints that make men free.” Real freedom is best understood as a form of optimizing constraint so as to maximize choice and opportunity.
